A second in Sydney - Going, Going, Gone Gowings

At least it's not the last of the Gowings shops, but as of this morning Sydney has lost one of the ships in the fleet which is the Gowings mercantile institution, established in 1868. From 9am this morning the Wynyard location of Gowings (closed since late last week, due to unprofitability) is auctioning off their shop fittings, manequins, sundries, etc...

Apparently the other three locations of Gowings are in warm to hot financial water as well, with rumours flying that they will move out of their landmark building at George and Market Streets or at least rent it out to different tenants.

Gowings is a good place to arrange to meet someone because the shop has an endless variety of toys and gadgets on display, so you can while away the minutes as you wait for your friend to arrive. It's a place of wizened character in a city that sometimes feels like it's growing too big for its britches. Here's hoping Gowings doesn't become another coffee franchise...
